The summer-long, low-pressure arena for politicians – especially lesser-known challengers to incumbents – to hone their political skills and messages in advance of election campaigns and away from the cynical and watchful glare of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. The Barbecue Circuit takes place during the summer months, when Parliament is not in session.
It is the political equivalent of the out-of-town opening of a Broadway show; with much lower stakes, and in front of smaller, more tolerant audiences, the performers test out their act and work out the bugs. Entire campaign teams also use this time to test out operational readiness.
