A collective term which refers to the largest and most influential corporations in Quebec. They include, but are not limited to: Bombardier, PowerCorp, Quebecor Media, the Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec (the Quebec Pension Plan) and Molson Coors Brewing Co.
The term also refers to the combined economic might of these corporations and their shared influence on Quebec fiscal policy. Not to be missed, however, is the “us-vs-them” mentality in which “Quebec Inc.” is often juxtaposed against the combined might of Toronto’s Bay Street.
When Quebec-based companies are threatened with takeover (e.g. Rona Hardware by Lowe’s) from outside Quebec, nationalists and the media call on “Quebec Inc.” to ride to the rescue and “Quebec Inc.” seldom disappoints. Rona has struggled to recover ever since.
