“Salmon Arm Salute”

Pierre Trudeau’s act of raising his middle finger to protesters from his seat inside a private rail car during a vacation in Salmon Arm, BC with his children on August 8, 1982.

The Salmon Arm Salute became very much the visual equivalent of “fuddle duddle” [see Fuddle Duddle]. Over a quarter century later, the Ontario Film Board added the one-fingered salute1 to its list of crude behaviours.
